Tenancy fraud and unauthorised occupants policy - 6. Prevention

We will carry out targeted campaigns to highlight the consequences of tenancy fraud and publicise cases where we have successfully taken enforcement action to regain possession of a property from someone who has committed fraud. Information about tenancy fraud is also available on our website.

At the start of tenancies, when new tenants are signing their tenancy agreement, we explain that subletting is a breach of tenancy and under certain circumstances, a criminal offence.

All housing applicants and new tenants must declare that they have provided true and accurate information. We check that all applicants are eligible for the housing they are

applying for by validating their identity before signing an occupancy agreement, verifying the household's circumstances and checking ownership or occupation history.

All 'Right to Buy' applications will be verified to ensure that the details provided are accurate.

We will work with external agencies such as the National Anti-Fraud Network and National Fraud Initiative to cross reference data and strengthen our verification checks.
