Executive summary
H&F is a champion of all people, inclusive of race, faith, disability, sexuality, and transgender identity.
We are committed to tackling hate crime because we understand the impact of these crimes on individuals and communities. All residents and visitors should live freely and with dignity and that no one should exist in fear of discrimination, in any form.
We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind and, working with local partners, are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening.
A hate crime is when someone commits a crime against another person because of prejudice or dislike towards certain things about them. This can include the victim's race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. What makes it a hate crime is that either the victim or anyone believes it was done because of this bias, rather than another reason.
Our approach
We know that to effectively tackle hate crime, we need the whole community to work together.
This strategy sets out how, along with our partners, we will tackle hate crime in the borough. It was co-produced with residents, youth groups, statutory organisations, faith groups, local businesses and voluntary and community sector partners to ensure it reflects the needs of the borough.
We will continue to work with partners as we implement our action plan.
Our objectives
Our objectives were consulted on with residents and partners to ensure the strategy is focused on what residents want and need us to tackle -
- Objective 1: Prevent hate crime and increase community cohesion.
- Objective 2: Increase trust and confidence to encourage reporting hate crimes and hate incidents.
- Objective 3: Provide effective support to those affected by hate crime (including witnesses)
- Objective 4: Work with partners to take coordinated action against perpetrators.
