Laughter and excitement filled Colwith Road as Melcombe primary school transformed the street into a pop-up playground for its second successful car-free event.

The children swapped their desks for outdoor games on Thursday 3 April with the help of Hammersmith & Fulham Council's Play Streets programme.

The fun-filled day featured bouncy space hopper races, volleyball with giant beach balls and a colourful hopscotch game. Check out all the photos here.

Old-school cool

"It was lovely to see the children enjoy the old-fashioned games outside that I grew up playing. The Play Street was a chance for kids to play outside and away from their gadgets," said Maresa Rickard, a teacher at Melcombe Primary School.

ZjaZja, a Year 3 newcomer to Melcombe primary, was a big fan of the day and "loved playing with the inflatable beach balls and bubbles," while Year 6 student Yasmin particularly liked the space hopper races.

West London Free primary school also hosted their own Play Street on the same day, showing the growing popularity of these family-friendly events across the borough.

"The planning process was very easy. We will be in contact to host another one for the summer fair," Maresa added.

Your street could be next

Hammersmith & Fulham Council is encouraging all residents to consider hosting their own Play Street this summer.

With warmer weather approaching, it's the perfect time to transform your local street into a temporary playground. You can connect with your neighbours, and children can enjoy active outdoor play.
