Record year for H&F recycling heroes

Food waste and recycling collections hit new highs while new garden waste service is taking root in H&F.

'Thumbs up' for our highest recycling rates yet.

H&F residents have helped save millions in taxpayers' money through record-breaking recycling in 2024.

Monthly collections jumped from 391 tonnes in 2023 to 1,482 tonnes in 2024. This means six times more food waste recycling now creates renewable energy instead of being incinerated.

Meanwhile our new garden waste collection service has flourished with more than 600 residents now subscribed.

Cllr Sharon Holder, H&F Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: "Thank you to our recycling champions – your fantastic efforts help us save taxpayer money while keeping our borough clean and green."

From plate to power

Food waste recycling creates renewable energy through a process called 'anaerobic digestion'.

Micro-organisms break down the waste over 72 hours. This produces biogas for the power grid, providing clean energy to thousands of homes and businesses across the country.

The leftover material is perfect for local farmers to use as a high-quality fertiliser to grow food.

Other recycling wins in 2024 include:

  • 12,977 tonnes of mixed dry recycling (2,500 tonnes more than 2023)
  • 274 tonnes of textiles through home collections and local drop-off banks (a 25-tonne increase from 2023)
  • and 39 tonnes of garden waste.

New garden waste service

We've also launched new best-value garden waste collections in H&F after 15 years without a dedicated service.

Weekly collections cost just £1.84 a week – cheaper than private companies – to take care of residents' garden trimmings including grass and flower cuttings, leaves, twigs and sticks, pruning and fallen fruit.
