Local youngsters are scoring big at 'Safe Camp', a free initiative that's given H&F teens a chance to stay active, make friends, and have fun during the school holidays.

Safe Camp has been a beacon of positivity for H&F's youth for nearly two decades.

What started as a small gathering in Fulham has blossomed into a thriving programme across three locations – including Phoenix Academy in Shepherds Bush.

Eric Sumner's journey, from attendee to head coach at Safe Camp, is a testament to the programme's transformative powers. "I grew up on Edward Woods estate, always out and about around White City and Shepherds Bush," Eric explained. "I found out that [Phoenix Academy] has a camp here which involved a lot of sports, so I signed up with my friends."

Every day during the school holidays, up to 80 young people aged 8-16 flock to Safe Camp to enjoy free sports activities and foster friendships in a supportive environment.

Fourteen years on, at 28 years old, Eric's journey has come full circle. "I did it for two years, then started volunteering. Now I'm head coach – still here, still loving it."

More than just fun and games

Qualified coaches offer a range of activities, from football to street hockey, basketball, and even trampolining.

Partner organisations and frequent guest coaches include local football clubs Chelsea FC and QPR, much to the delight of aspiring young athletes.

H&F's pioneering Gangs Unit and community safety teams will soon boost the camp's offerings with educational talks on topics including hate crime, and violence against women and girls and where to find support.

Safe Camp is joint initiative by London Sports Trust and the Met Police, open to H&F children on free school meals.

Youth support

Ellaria Mengistu, Deputy Youth Parliament Member for H&F, was impressed by her recent visit to the W12 holiday camp. "This initiative is great. It gives young people from the area a safe place to go, keep active, and keep off the streets," she said.

Ellaria is part of H&F's Youth Council which works to represent local young people's voices.

Its latest project, a podcast series on relationships, involves 11-25-year-olds working with H&F Council. Episodes will be shared via the Youth Hub webpage during H&F's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Abuse.
