Pop-up playground brings the fun to a Hammersmith street

We turned Colwith Road into a safe and fun playground for a local community school and neighbourhood.

Car-free Colwith Road outside Melcombe primary school

Space hoppers, jump ropes and chalk covered a car-free Colwith Road outside Melcombe primary school.

With the help of Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s Play Streets programme, the street was closed for a few hours to allow kids to enjoy playing out recently.

The youngsters bounced through a colourful hopscotch course and competed in races on the car-free street. Parents, teachers and neighbours even joined in the tug-of-war competition. See all the photos here.

Cllr Alex Sanderson, H&F Cabinet Member for Children and Education, said: “We want our Play Streets to create safe spaces for play right on families' doorsteps. It’s a part of our work to make H&F the best place to grow up.”

Melcombe’s executive headteacher, Anne-Marie Strachan, added: “The pupils thoroughly enjoyed playing safely on the street. The H&F team promptly completed the setup process as soon as they arrived, and minimal input was required from the school.”

Host your own Play Street

We're inviting all residents and families to join the Play Streets fun for FREE.

Play Streets offers children and local residents the opportunity to play freely and safely near their homes. These free, temporary road closures are simple to organise and help build community spirit by allowing neighbours to connect.

To make the process as smooth as possible, H&F Council will:

•    Manage the road closure
•    Provide marshals and barriers
•    Offer activities for school events (i.e. sporting activities, ball games, skipping ropes)
•    Assist with setup for larger events

Summer of play in H&F

Nearly a dozen successful resident-led and school-led Play Streets have already been held across the borough – including the recent  Fresh Air Festival outside Wendell Park primary school in Shepherds Bush.

We want to make H&F into a playground for all this summer, with loads of community events planned in our parks and on our estates.

Get in on the fun at our CommUNITY Day, a free festival in Ravenscourt Park on Saturday 20 July from 12-6pm.

We’ll also have free activities and food for children, young people and families throughout the summer holidays. Our Summer in the City programme runs from 20 July to 30 August, including events under the flyover like yoga classes, silent discos, DJ workshops and more.
