Everyone has a role to play in supporting children and young people's language and communication skills, including the child's family, school, and the community. Based on the child's need, speech and language therapists may also collaborate with the professionals working with the child or work directly with the child and the family to support. Children communicate in many ways, not just through speaking. It is important to recognise and support all forms of communication in your child to better help them connect with and enjoy the world around them. As well as verbal communication, your child might communicate through non-verbal communication, such as facial expressions, gestures, body language, pointing, signing, eye contact, or use of pictures. Please honour all forms of your child's communication to support their development.
