How did you get started as an electrician?
I have been an electrician my whole working life. When I was a kid I really looked up to my friend's dad who was an electrician and ever since it's been something I've wanted to do. It was my mum that really encouraged me to pursue it. Thanks to her, I decided to study it at college. Seventeen years later, I still love my job.
What is your connection to Hammersmith & Fulham?
I have lived in Shepherds Bush my whole life. My favourite thing about the area is the strong sense of community. Lots of families have lived in the neighbourhood a long time. I always bump into so many friendly, familiar faces.
What is a typical day in the life of an electrician at H&F Council?
Once I've been assigned my jobs in the morning, I'll head to the wholesalers to pick up materials. Then I head out to homes and communal areas across the borough, fixing lights and any electrical faults in our properties.
What is your favourite part of the job?
For me, the best part of my job is customer satisfaction. When I walk out of someone's home and they say a genuine 'thank you' because you've made a difference and improved their home – it gives me the best sense of job satisfaction.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
The work can become challenging when a job turns out to be more complex than originally thought. This might involve rewiring or installing temporary power to keep a boiler up and running or keep the fridge on. I find communication is key. If I explain the process clearly and give them accurate timescales, people will be understanding. It's always important to reduce as much disruption as possible.
What makes H&F Council a great place to work?
I really take pride in the ethos of the in-house repairs team. Everyone I work with treats the properties as if they are their own homes with lots of respect. Providing good service and communication is what we strive to do for residents. Trying to get the job done right when people need it most. It makes a real difference to people's everyday life.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I really like to stay active and healthy. I like jogging, going to the gym and I play golf. I'm also a proud Queens Park Rangers season ticket holder, so you'll often find me watching a match at Loftus Road.
