Impressive drama is being staged on our doorstep – with half-price tickets for H&F residents and a chance to spot the stars of tomorrow.
The London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art in Talgarth Road, Hammersmith, has unveiled its autumn season with five productions between now and Christmas.
LAMDA – the UK’s oldest drama school – is financially supported by H&F Council, with residents benefiting from £7 tickets instead of the usual £14 in their new Sainsbury Theatre, created as part of a recent £28.2million investment.
The season is a showcase for graduating actors and technicians who put on 20 professionally directed and designed productions each year.
“The quality and standard of LAMDA’s work is tremendous,” said Cllr Andrew Jones, H&F Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration.
“We are determined to make H&F the best place to work, live and socialise in Europe and I’m proud that the council supports this drama college. It underlines what a richly artistic borough this is, while the half-price ticket offer makes top theatre truly affordable.”
H&F support for LAMDA forms part of the council’s new arts strategy which aims to build on the existing cultural scene, boost employment and help the local economy.
New season
The season begins with The Children’s Hour (9-18 October), written by Lillian Hellman and directed by Mary Papadima. A play with adult themes, it was revived in the West End in 2011 with Elizabeth Moss and Keira Knightley. The controversial 1934 show was initially banned in London.
Gethsemane (10-19 October) is a modern political drama written for the National Theatre by David Hare and directed by Ian Brown.
From 11-19 October, Sucker Punch is Roy Williams’ boxing ring play, exploring race relations in Margaret Thatcher’s Britain.
Measure For Measure is staged from 28 November to 7 December; Shakespeare’s dark comedy being directed by Tinuke Craig, while the season wraps up with The Taming of the Shrew (29 November-7 December), the Bard’s classic drama, directed by Rebecca Frecknell.
H&F residents, students, over 65s, under 18s and those in receipt of jobseekers’ allowance are entitled to half price.
