Students from the Fulham Primary School reading challenge team
A team from Fulham Primary beat 15 other teams to triumph in the grand final of a quick-fire reading quiz.
The winning team led from the start, and stormed to victory with 2,000 points while fending off competition from teams representing schools in three other boroughs.
The 10 and 11 year olds competed to win the TSF Readers’ Cup in a challenge set up by the Thomas’s Schools Foundation (TSF), a charity that runs educational children’s programmes.
“It has been such an exciting experience to be part of and today’s final was brilliant. The setup was amazing,” said one child involved.
Teams from St George’s Primary in Battersea, Alderbrook Primary in Clapham and St Mary’s in Kensington, as well as champions Fulham Primary, took part in the final, cheered on by an excited crowd of family and friends at Thomas’s Battersea.
All the teams competing had already won the preliminary round in their borough, beating several other schools, before continuing on to the final.
Each team of nine pupils answered a series of quick-fire questions on three set books: Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen, Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman and Dreamsnatcher by Abi Elphinstone.
Abi, who is also the TSF Readers’ Cup patron, presented the trophy to the winners, as well as signed copies of her new book to all the children who took part.
The TSF Readers’ Cup is a unique reading challenge designed to encourage a love of reading in children from many different communities in London.
TSF is a volunteer run, needs driven charity that supports over 4,000 children through a range of programmes, from art and music to academics and sport.
