Gwendwr Gardens in West Kensington
Residents can once again enjoy a much-loved memorial park in West Kensington after it was given a new lease of life.
Sixty-seven-year-old Gwendwr Gardens had been closed during April while Hammersmith & Fulham Council did repair works to replace crooked paving, trim overgrown foliage and plant areas of native woodland flowers.
The park had been closed since mid-February, but now residents and visitors can also now benefit from 5,000 new plants giving the park fresh spurt of colour and boost to biodiversity, just in time for summer.
“We are delighted that residents can now return to enjoy this characterful little park which we’ve carefully restored to its former glory,” said Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Residents’ Services.
Gwendwr Gardens was opened in 1949 after being gifted to what was then Fulham Council by the Gunter Estate as a memorial to those residents from West Kensington who died in the bombings of the Second World War.
The triangular park, which is just under an acre, is enclosed by Gwendwr Road, Trevanion Road and Gunterstone Road.
It is named after the Gunter family’s home in Wales.
