The Specialist School Nursing team provide health care to children in two of the Special Schools in the area, ensuring they are supported to be in school.
The service is provided by children's trained nurses and health care assistants. This team supports the health and development of children and young people within the special schools setting, aged from 3 up to 19 years old.
We are primarily here to ensure that the children and young people remain as healthy as possible in life, stay safe whilst at the school and enjoy and achieve. On a daily basis we administer medicines to the children and young people at the school, give gastrostomy feeds, manage unexpected events such as seizures, compromised airways, and provide other nursing cares as required by the individual children.
We also deal with general medical queries from the staff regarding the health of their pupils and formally assess those who require it to ensure their safety.
The service also formulates and updates individual health care plans to ensure that all of the children and young people at the school receive bespoke care and attention. The nurses will also contribute to Children's Education, Health and Care Plans and participate in annual reviews.
