We've been working with Sir John Lillie Primary School to make the area around the school safer, greener and cleaner.
As of Tuesday 3 September, changes to the school drop-offs and pick-ups have been introduced on a trial basis, and we welcome parents' and residents' feedback before making any permanent decisions.
School run closures
Delaford Street is closed to motorists from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days only. The street remains open the rest of the time.
It's to help protect pupils, cut air pollution in the area and make it easier to walk or cycle to school.
From November 4 2024 the physical barriers will be replaced by automatic number plate recognition cameras. See below for more information.

Removing barriers from Delaford Street
From 4 November 2024, we will replace the current barriers with automatic number plate recognition cameras which will not require any physical obstacles.
The smart technology cameras will continue to enforce the school run closures for non-exempt drivers during peak drop-off and pick-up times.
As before, only exempt drivers will be able to move in and out of the school street zone freely. The cameras will pick up non-compliant drivers during the times of the school street restrictions.
There will be additional signage and a transition period, where we will be sending warning letters to drivers who are not compliant with the restrictions.
Exemptions
Exempt drivers include:
- Residents living in the restricted area
- Carers
- School staff
- Blue badge holders or children and adults with mobility issues
- Emergency services
- Bin lorries
- Postal services and traders who require access to properties in the new school street.
We're also exploring different traffic calming measures in Lillie Road to make this busy street safer.
We welcome your feedback before making any permanent decisions. Share your views on the School Street Plus trial by emailing schoolstreets@lbhf.gov.uk.
Neighbourhood improvements
We're looking into how and where we can plant more trees in the area – without removing existing parking spaces – to create a greener street.
We're also working with the school to install air pollution barriers to reduce children's exposure to our dirty air.
Meanwhile, new bike parking will encourage more cycling to reduce non-essential trips by car.
We'll continue to work closely with the school, local residents and local businesses to ensure these changes benefit the entire community.

Have your say
The school run closures are being implemented under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) from 3 September 2024. We will be collecting feedback and comments on School Streets Plus throughout the trial period.
This gives parents and local residents the ability to share their views on the changes throughout the trial. Their feedback will continue to help shape future improvements. The trial must run for at least six months before it can be made permanent.
We and Sir John Lillie Primary School welcome your feedback on schoolstreets@lbhf.gov.uk. Formal objections must be made in the first six months of the trial.
