We've been working with Holy Cross Catholic Primary School to make the area around the school safer, greener and cleaner.
As of Monday 4 November, changes to the school drop-offs and pick-ups will be introduced on a trial basis, and we welcome parents' and residents' feedback before making any permanent decisions.
School run closures
Part of Basuto Road will be closed to motorists from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days only. The street remains open the rest of the time.
It's to help protect pupils, cut air pollution in the area and make it easier to walk or cycle to school.
Map of timed road closures
Movable barriers help signpost the new school streets during school run hours only, and only on school days.
Safety stewards are on hand to ensure a smooth transition for all. The barriers can be moved to clear the street for exempt drivers, including:
- Residents living in the restricted area
- Carers
- School staff
- Blue badge holders or children and adults with mobility issues
- Emergency services
- Bin lorries
- Postal services and traders who require access to properties in the new school street.
Please let them know if you're exempt.
Neighbourhood improvements
We're looking into how and where we can plant more trees in the area – without removing existing parking spaces – to create a greener street.
Based on local feedback, we've also been asked to consider other options which may include wider pavements and bike parking to encourage more cycling to reduce non-essential trips by car.
We'll continue to work closely with the school, local residents and local businesses to ensure these changes benefit the entire community.
Email us on schoolstreets@lbhf.gov.uk for further suggestions.
Have your say
The school run closures are being implemented under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) from 4 November 2024. We will be collecting feedback and comments on School Streets Plus throughout the trial period.
We want to hear from Holy Cross primary school parents and members of the wider school community, including carers and residents. To share your views on the School Street Plus at Holy Cross Catholic primary school, please respond to our online survey on Have Your Say.
It's your chance to feedback on the proposed designs and give us your ideas for environmental improvements you would like to see in the area.
This gives parents and local residents the ability to share their views on the changes throughout the trial. Their feedback will continue to help shape future improvements. The trial must run for at least six months before it can be made permanent.
We and Holy Cross Catholic Primary School welcome your feedback on schoolstreets@lbhf.gov.uk. Formal objections must be made in the first six months of the trial.
