Annual health checks are for people with a learning disability aged 14 and over. They are done by a doctor once a year, to help you stay healthy.
The health checks are important because people with a learning disability often have poorer physical and mental health than other people. They can also sometimes find it hard to know when they are unwell, or to tell someone about it.
Benefits of an annual health check
Annual health checks can:
- improve the person's health by identifying problems
- give the person ideas about how to be more healthy
- include a health action plan
- allows the person to get used to going to the doctor
NHS England are working to make sure that more people are receiving a health check. If you think you or someone you know should have an annual health check, you can contact your GP surgery to arrange one.
