The Listening Place was set up in London, by a group of volunteers with a great deal of experience in supporting the suicidal. They had recognised that there is little on going face-to-face support available for many people with chronic suicidal feelings, and that some of this support can be given by well trained and professionally supervised volunteers.
Initial appointments are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, between 9am-9pm.
The listening place do not have a 'drop-in' centre or a helpline.
They are unable to see visitors under the age of 18, or lack capacity under the guidelines of the Mental Capacity Act, or are not suicidal. They provide free, face-to-face support for anyone that feel life is no longer worth living. Trained listening volunteers, who are advised and guided by professionals, will deliver the support.
Following an initial meeting with a supervising volunteer, a plan of support is agreed with the visitor. The same listening volunteer will then support the same visitor during their sessions. A review at the end of the agreed plan will decide how best to proceed in the future.
The listening place provide a safe, warm, and confidential environment, and have wheelchair access.
