Tiny forests

Hammersmith & Fulham is home to London's largest network of Tiny Forests, with 5 dense, fast-growing woodlands across the borough.

What are Tiny Forests?

Tiny Forests are innovative urban woodlands that help connect people with nature while creating vital new habitats for wildlife. Each forest packs 600 native trees into an area the size of a tennis court, helping clean our air while providing homes for local wildlife.

By planting trees densely – up to 3 per square metre – we create natural competition for light and resources. This makes the trees grow up to 5 times faster than normal, producing a mature forest in just 20 to 30 years instead of 100 to 200 years.

As the forest develops, it becomes home to hundreds of animal and plant species, with up to 500 different species making it their home within just 3 years.

Since 2021, residents have helped us bring five Tiny Forests to H&F, the largest network in London:

Why we're creating Tiny Forests

Environmental challenges like air pollution, heat stress, and loss of biodiversity are not only an environmental challenge but a threat to people's health.

Our Tiny Forests are a vital part of making H&F cleaner and greener.

They help us work towards our goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions, clean our air, support local wildlife, prevent flooding, and bring nature closer to our communities.

Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Ecology:

These forests are fantastic for the climate, improve the look of our parks and increase biodiversity enormously. It's all part of our process of greening Hammersmith & Fulham."
