Finding a school place

A school place can be made available to all children aged 4+ to 16+ at one of our local schools. Contact the School Admissions team or call: 0208 753 1085

School admissions staff are available every day between 9am to 1pm to answer enquiries and explain the process for applying for school places.

Once in school, children will be well placed to access a wider range of support available.

Further education and college provision

For 16 to 19 year-olds, please contact Matthew Coulbeck on 07919217535 who can provide support, advice and make introductions to the range of post 16 providers in H&F.

These include school sixth forms, West London College, William Morris Sixth Form, apprenticeships, employment and training options. Matthew is available from 10am to 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for initial discussions.

RefuAid provide language grants for study towards accredited exams.

Refugee Assessment and Guidance Unit - London Metropolitan University provide qualification support for doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives pharmacists, other health professionals. This includes work placements in the NHS and funding for professional exams.

Supporting refugees into employment - Refugee Council provide support for refugees with a background in teaching to requalify. This includes training and information workshops and voluntary placements at schools.

Restart Refugee Support offers aspiring entrepreneurs, or professionals with refugee status, an interest-free loan for a business start-up or for re-qualification.

The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network supports refugee entrepreneurs in starting or expanding a business.

Bread & Roses trains refugee women in floristry, helping them to learn English, develop skills and build confidence.

Chatterbox train and employ refugees to teach their own language to others.

Community Education Forum UK works with the community to identify and support the social, educational, training, health, economic and developmental needs for young people and their families in West London.

SOAS Sanctuary Scholarships, SOAS University of London provide up to six Undergraduate and one Masters places; including full tuition fee waiver. Visit their website for full terms and conditions.

University of East London Open Learning Initiative is a 10-week weekend course introducing refugees to higher education. You must apply by July.

Student Action for Refugees provides a network of student groups and helps you find a group at a university near you for networking and conversation.

Hope for the Young Grants offers grants of up to £3000 towards tuition fees, transport and living allowances for young asylum seekers between ages 16-25.

University of Bath is offering two scholarships for Postgraduate students, covering tuition and living costs, and bursaries to cover some living costs for one Undergraduate student.

Children's Centres

Children's centres offer:

H&F is served by the following kinds of public transport. Please consult the www.tfl.gov.uk website to plan your journey and check status updates.

Busses

Payment

Top-up cards (Oyster cards) can be purchased (and topped up) at ticket machines in underground/tube stations. You can also travel with a contactless debit or credit card. You only need to touch your card on the card reader once as you board. There is no need to touch out on buses.

Bus drivers do not sell tickets and you cannot use a tube ticket to board a bus.

Children under 11 travel for free on buses with an adult or alone. Children of ages 11-15 can travel for free with an 11-15 Zip Oyster photocard.

Getting around

You can plan a bus journey on www.tfl.gov.uk/modes/buses/. Or you can locate your nearest bus station and examine the available bus routes displayed on the 'spider map', bus spider maps can also be found online at www.tfl.gov.uk/maps_/bus-spider-maps.

Make sure you are at the right stop. Most bus stations will have a 'spider map' of bus routes with the stop locations shown in a mini-map in the middle. A mini-map is shown on the right, with the various local stops identified by letters in red bubbles. Once you have selected your route number/s, you will need to check which stop they serve and then use the mini-map to get to that stop.

Underground/Tube

Payment

Individual journey tickets, day/multi-day travelcards and Oyster cards can be purchased (and topped up) at ticket machines in underground/tube stations. Contactless is also accepted. You need to touch in and out on the underground.

Individual ticket prices depend on the zone you are travelling to. You can find out which zone you are going to by checking a map. Seek help if in doubt.

Children under 11 travel free with an adult. Children aged 11-15 can travel at child rates with an 11-15 Zip Oyster photocard.

Getting around

Maps are available at tube stations or see Standard Tube Map (pdf). Use the map to identify the line you need (by name or colour) and the direction you are going (northbound, southbound, eastbound, westbound). If there are multiple lines serving the same station, follow the signs to find the correct platform.

Advice

Check Tube - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk) for status updates before you leave. Leave in good time to avoid delays.

Always pay attention to the destination displayed on the platform screen and on the side of the train as some lines branch out and your destination may be on a different branch of the same line. Mind the gap.

Overground

Through Kensington Olympia and Shepherd's Bush stations. This is an over ground train system only serving London. See tube map. If you are using Oyster card or contactless, make sure you touch your card on the card reader both IN and OUT, which is easy to forget as there are no turnstiles.

National rail

Through Kensington Olympia and Imperial Wharf stations which are served by the rail company Southern. National rail services may run when the tube is on strike and may be faster. Tube tickets, Oyster cards, contactless are accepted modes of payment. A combined tube and national rail map is available on National Rail - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk).

River travel

Through Chelsea Harbour Pier near the Imperial Wharf tube and rail station. You can take a "river bus." Oyster cards and contactless are accepted. Maps and timetables can be found on Timetable - Uber Boat by Thames Clippers

Santander cycles

There are bikes available for hire throughout London. You can hire these using a debit or credit card and return them to any docking point. Once you have paid the £2 bike access fee for the day, the first 30 minutes of each journey is free. Longer journeys cost £2 for each extra 30 minutes. View a map of where these bikes are stationed.

Private households in London have special waste collection arrangements. The council collects two types of waste.

Non-recyclable household rubbish

You will have to put all non-recyclable waste in your own grey/black rubbish bags, which can be bought in supermarkets. Tie securely when you leave out for collection.

Recyclables

The council will provide you with a roll of transparent 'smart sacks' for recyclables, or you can collect a roll of smart sacks at your nearest library. You can find out more about what is recycled on What can be recycled

Please pay attention as getting it wrong may mean that it will not be sorted and will have to be transported to an incinerator at extra cost.

Both types of waste are collected once a week on the same day. You can find out what your collection day is on Nearest search - bin & recycling day and entering your postcode.

Leave your rubbish/recycling out after 9pm before collection day (or before 6am on collection day).

Waste collection days only change at Christmas and New Year

Open Age
A local charity that offers a wide range of exercise and arts & crafts activities for local people aged 50 and above in community venues in H&F and in centres in Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. Typical costs for a one-hour activity session is £1.
Activities include Dance, Yoga, Pilates, Creative Writing, Singing, Art, computer skills training and a programme of socials, trips and visits. Charity shops

These sell good quality used goods such as clothes, books and household items. Some names to look out for are Fara, Traid, Mind, Oxfam, Cancer Research UK, British Red Cross, Royal Trinity Hospice, Octavia Foundation, British Heart Foundation.

'Fara Kids' shops cater specifically for pregnant women and children and are particularly good for children's clothes, toys, prams and maternity wear. There are two close by:

Free 'Food Banks'

If you find you haven't enough money to buy food, ask at your GP or Job Centre for a food voucher. You can take this to one of three local Food Banks and get free food to take home and cook. You won't always have a lot of choice.

Sights

Hammersmith Riverside Walk

This riverside walk will take you along one of the most picturesque stretches of the River Thames to Chiswick.

1. From Hammersmith tube station, head towards the Hammersmith Bridge along the riverbank. Follow the waterfront west along Lower Mall, past Furnival Gardens.
2. Lower Mall and Upper Mall: Stroll around the boathouses, regency verandas, Victorian pubs, such as the 17^th century Dove, and the marina.
3. Approaching Chiswick Mall, old-style lanterns line the street and grand houses look out onto the river. It is very tranquil, and you will be able to hear many birds in the river and trees.

5. Continue on to St Nicholas Parish Church. Chiswick developed as a village around the church from around 1181. The current church dates from 1882–84. Go through the churchyard and out onto Burlington Lane.

7. Chiswick House isn't far from Chiswick High Road, where there are lots of shops and regular transport links back to Hammersmith.

How to book your Covid 19 vaccine

If you have an NHS number and are registered with a GP, you can book your vaccination.

You can find your NHS number on your prescriptions, letters from the NHS and in the NHS app. You can also look it up by entering your name, date of birth and postcode on The NHS website - NHS

You can book your vaccine by calling 119 or by contacting your GP practice. Please remember that only after two doses will you have maximum protection, so book both at the same time.

How to register with a GP surgery

A GP (General Practitioner) is your first point of contact with any non-urgent medical care and works to treat all common medical conditions. You will most often visit your GP at their doctor's officer, commonly referred to as a Surgery.

Anyone in England can register with a GP surgery. It's free to register and you don't need proof of address or immigration status, ID or an NHS number. Your information will not be passed onto police or immigration officers.

GP surgeries are usually the first contact if you have a health problem. They can treat many conditions and give health advice. They can also refer you to other NHS services.

Because of coronavirus (COVID-19), try to avoid going into a GP surgery to register. Instead check the GP surgery website to see if you can register online or telephone or email the GP surgery and ask to be registered as a patient

Accessing health care

First point of call: If you are feeling unweel, contact your GP practice for an appointment

Second point of call: If it is urgent but not life-threatening, call 111. This service provides health care and advice, onward referral and can help book appropriate healthcare services, including GP services, Urgent Treatment Centres, Emergency Departments, emergency dental services and pharmacy services.

Third point of call: If it is a life-threatening emergency, call 999. This service is for emergencies such as a heart attack, stroke, or serious accident. The phone line is available all day, every day.

If emergency help is needed, an ambulance will be sent to help.
