We fund Bishop Creighton House to run the Safer Homes service

Service description

The Bishop Creighton House – Safer Homes Service offers child safety, adult safety, security and fire safety assessments at home, with a follow-up of doing any small jobs or adaptations needed. Funded by H&F, it includes fitting smoke alarms and other safety features, and sharing information and advice. The service focuses on older people and vulnerable families with young children.

The service continued wherever possible, but had to reduce home visits due to lockdown measures.

Use of volunteers

Two volunteers delivered 98 hours, contributing to the work by paid staff. This is the equivalent to £1,063, if the London Living Wage is applied to the volunteering hours.

Outcomes being achieved

98% of clients reported feeling safer and / or more secure at home after having safety and / or security equipment fitted.

99% of clients reported feeling less anxious about their and their family's home security and personal safety having received the advice and information.

98% of clients reported feeling safer and / or more secure at home after having safety and / or security equipment fitted.

100% of clients who had small jobs carried out reported feeling less worried and more able to manage in their home as a result of the work being done.

87% of clients who had draught proofing fitted reported feeling less worried and more able to manage in their own home as a result of the work being done.

None of the elderly clients who completed the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ) had an accident at home in the following 6 months.

None of the parents who completed the CSQ reported any of their children as having had an accident at home in the following 6 months.

There were 139 fires in residential properties in H&F between April 2018 and March 2019 - none of these were in the homes of service users who completed the CSQ.

There were 1053 residential burglaries reported between April 2018 and March 2019 - none of these were in the homes of service users who completed the CSQ.

Future plans

After the lockdown, more service users can and will be visited in their homes.

The service will continue to work in partnership with the police, fire brigade, social services and other third sector organisations.

Aim to start a painting, decorating and gardening service.
