NHS SEND supported internship, work experience and volunteering opportunities

Are you a young person with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) looking to gain experience in the NHS?

These opportunities are available at five NHS Trusts across West London: Chelsea & Westminster, Imperial College, Hillingdon, Central & North West London, and West London NHS

The OPEN MINDS programme offers supported internships, work experience, and volunteering roles tailored to help you build skills and explore career opportunities within the NHS.

Opportunities available

  • Supported Internships: Gain structured, hands-on work experience in real NHS roles, with the support of a dedicated mentor.
  • Work Experience: Short-term placements designed to give you a feel for NHS careers, including administrative, patient care and facilities roles.
  • Volunteering: Get involved in areas like ward support, patient care, administration, or helping in hospital shops, with an onsite mentor to support you.

Example role

A recent participant completed a supported internship in the administration team at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, where they developed key skills in data entry, customer service, and office support—leading to a permanent role!
