Guidance on how to buy copies of birth, marriage, civil partnership and death certificates.

We can supply certificates for births, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths that happened in Hammersmith & Fulham.

You can buy certificates for births, marriages and deaths from 1837 and civil partnerships from 2005.

Certificates can be ordered online and paid for by debit or credit card.

    Birth certificates

    To order a copy of someone's birth certificate, we need to know their:

    • full name at birth
    • date of birth
    • place of birth, for example, the hospital or other address
    • mother's full name, including any family names.

    Death certificates

    To order a copy of someone's death certificate, we need to know their:

    • full name, including any previous family names
    • date of the death
    • date of birth
    • place of death.

    Marriage and civil partnership certificates

    To order a copy of a marriage or civil partnership certificate, we need to know:

    • the full names of both people, including any previous family names
    • the date of the marriage or civil partnership
    • where the marriage or civil partnership happened, including the name of the building or church.

Certificate charges

Certificates cost £17.50 each and are processed within 10 working days. Please then allow up to 10 working days for them to arrive in the post when using the recorded delivery option. There is a £5 admin fee which is included and is non-refundable if we do not hold the record at Hammersmith & Fulham Register Office.

If you need a certificate sooner, you can use our 'Priority' or 'While You Wait' services at an additional cost.

Certificates ordered using the Priority service will be processed within 24 hours (if ordered before 12 noon). For example, if the certificate is ordered at 10am, it will be ready at 10am the next day. Please then allow time for the certificate to arrive in the post (dependent on the postal service selected, see below).

Certificates ordered using the While You Wait service are normally processed in 1 hour. You will need to order the certificate before 12 noon for the certificate to be produced on the same day. Please then allow time for the certificate to arrive in the post (dependent on the postal service selected, see below).

All the required information needs to be provided for us to locate the entry and process the certificate as a priority.

Note 1: This is the time it takes the Register Office to produce a certificate, please then allow additional time dependent on postage option selected.

Note 2: If ordered before 12 noon on a working day, that is Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.

Delivery charges

You can choose to have your certificate delivered using the Royal Mail Signed For or Special Delivery services.

The Royal Mail Signed For service aims to deliver the next working day, including Saturdays. The usual time scale is 7 to 14 working days.

Choose the Royal Mail Special Delivery service if you want to guarantee next day delivery.

Orders made from abroad are sent using the Royal Mail International Signed and Tracked service.

End-to-end tracking and signature on delivery, online or via your mobile, is available for the Royal Mail Special Delivery and International Signed and Tracked services.

Collection

Certificates can be collected from our office on weekdays between 9am and 4:30pm.

While You Wait certificates must be ordered before 2pm if you wish to collect on the same day.

Events outside Hammersmith & Fulham

If the birth, civil partnership, marriage or death happened outside of H&F, you must contact the local authority where it happened to buy copy certificates, or order certificates from GOV.UK.

Unknown information

All records of births, civil partnerships, marriages and deaths which took place in England and Wales will be held at the General Register Office (GRO).

The GRO is able to carry out a much wider search in cases where details are not known.

You can order a certificate from the General Register Office.

We do not provide copies certificates of:

  • adoption certificates
  • divorce certificates
  • naturalisation and citizenship certificates
  • gender recognition certificates.
