Street cleaning and litter

Street cleaning and litter

Street sweepersIn June 2008 we entered into a seven year contract with Serco Limited to provide waste and cleansing services. Serco will be responsible for keeping the borough’s 130 miles of carriageway and 310 miles of pavements across the borough clean and tidy.

The roads have been colour-coded with the main roads in the borough being classed as red or blue and as such are scheduled for at least 16 hours continuous cleansing seven days a week.

All white roads are swept at least once per week on the same day as your refuse and recycling collection.

Litterbins

Litterbins in the main roads and shopping areas are emptied at least once a day, every morning including Sunday. In our busier pedestrian areas the bins are emptied on average twice a day.

Most items of litter and general waste can be disposed of in litter bins, including dog waste. However there are items which can not be disposed of in a litter bin. Please do not place these items in litter bins:

Raw meat
Medical Waste
Sharp objects
Electronic goods
Batteries
Hazardous materials or chemicals
Household waste – This is already collected at least once per week from every dwelling.

Please place recyclable materials (includes paper, bottles, cans, drink cartons, cardboard) in orange smart sacks for weekly collection or in any of our public Smart Banks.

If you would like more information on how to dispose of any items or you would like to report any problems with Street Cleansing, please contact the Cleaner Greener hotline on 020 8753 1100 or email cleaner.greener@lbhf.gov.uk.

Or use the online reporting facility
